AI agent vs chatbot: what's the difference?
A chatbot answers questions. An AI agent can also carry out actions you allow, through the tools you connect. Here's what that means in practice, and where the limits are.
What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?
A conversational interface answers questions; a configured agent can also carry out supported actions through connected tools. The important distinction is the actual permissions, actions and controls available.
The difference
What a chatbot does
It answers. Given a script or a knowledge base, it replies to the question in front of it: opening hours, a price, a policy. When the answer needs something done, like a booking, an order lookup or a follow-up, a person has to pick it up.
The difference
What an AI agent adds
It can also act, within limits you set. It uses the tools you connect and the actions you allow: check a calendar, look up an order, send a document, hand the conversation to a person. What it can do is exactly what it’s been given. No more.
In practice
Three examples
| The customer says | A chatbot | An AI agent with the right permissions |
|---|---|---|
| “Can I come in on Saturday morning?”A clinic | A chatbotShares the opening hours, and a person books it later. | An AI agent with the right permissionsOffers the free times from the clinic's Google Calendar, books the one chosen and sends reminders before the visit. |
| “Where's my order?”An online store | A chatbotExplains how to track an order. | An AI agent with the right permissionsLooks up the order and its tracking, and replies with where it is. |
| No reply for two days after a questionAny business | A chatbotNothing happens. | An AI agent with the right permissionsWhen switched on, follows up when they go quiet, within WhatsApp's rules, and stops when they reply. |

What matters
Permissions, actions and controls
Permissions
An agent reaches only the accounts and data you connect, with the access you give.
Actions
It can do only the actions you switch on. When a request is beyond it, or the customer asks for a person, it can flag the chat for your team.
Controls
You test it before it goes live, a check reads its instructions, serious problems hold publishing, people can take over a conversation, and opt-outs like STOP are honoured.
Limits
Said plainly
An agent can be wrong, and it is only as good as the knowledge and rules it’s given. It can’t do what it isn’t connected to or permitted to do. That’s why people stay in charge: review what it says, set what it may do, and step in when it matters.
